Following the end of Syria’s 29-year presence in Lebanon in 2005, many Syrians migrated to the country in search of work. Relations between these workers, Lebanese communities and the authorities were generally stable.

As the civil war in Syria intensified, refugees began arriving in Lebanon by the thousands. The influx placed growing pressure on housing, services and infrastructure, while tensions increased between some Lebanese communities and Syrian refugees.
